The AuSable Trip Scores for New Member!

New Member Jeff Hoffmann scored a Trophy Trout Hat from Hawkins Outfitters while on this years chapter trip to the Wa Wa Sum Lodge. Jeff joins a distinguished list of EDTU members to bag a 20+ inch trout on the trip.

Big Springs and Blue River Projects

Two projects our chapter has been extensively involved in are the Blue River and Big Springs Habitat Improvement projects in the Driftless area. These were done under the leadership of our good friends in the Nohr chapter.

Rusty Gates Receives FFF Conservation Award

The Federation of Fly Fishers has awarded long time friend of the chapter Rusty Gates their 2008 Conservation award. The FFF wrote in their Conclave publication, "Whether leading stream clean-up work, engaging in critical lawsuits or advocating for fisheries, Rusty Gates of Grayling, Michigan has made extraordinary personal contributions to our fisheries."

Mason Tract

On the conservation front you’ll note the following comment by Sheri McWhirter in the Traverse City paper: GRAYLING -- It's another win for environmental advocates in Crawford County.A federal judge this week denied Traverse City-based Savoy Energy's request to join a three-year-old lawsuit that he decided five months ago. U.S. District Judge David Lawson of the Eastern District of Michigan denied Savoy's motion to intervene in a case that involves blocked mineral exploration beneath a wilderness area known as the Mason Tract.

Stream in Montana Is Open to All

Unhappiness After Stream in Montana Is Open to All

HELENA, Mont. — A group of landowners, including several wealthy out-of-staters, are none too happy that their exclusive use of a scenic trout-rich stream in the Bitterroot Valley is coming to an end.

The Montana Supreme Court ruled here recently that the 16-mile-long stream, Mitchell Slough, is open to the public and that the landowners are not entitled to fence it off as part of their private sanctuaries.
